Thousands are expected to line the city streets for the Melbourne Cup Parade, but they’ll likely need an umbrella.

Despite Melburnians waking up to a sunny morning, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warns there’s a chance of rain, thunder and hail on Monday.

And Cup day itself won’t be much better, according to the BoM.

Senior forecaster Richard Carlyon has said racegoers are in for a grey, wet day of just 18C with showers and northwesterly winds of 20km/h to 30km/h and rain expected to fall during the big race.

It’s an improvement from Sunday’s weather after damaging winds brought down trees around Melbourne and near Warrnambool — blacking out about 3000 homes.

SES spokesman Mark Dorey said about 450 people called for help, but the majority of those calls were on Sunday afternoon – with only 15 of them made overnight.

Only 237 homes were without power just before 8am on Monday.

Those attending the Cup on Tuesday are also warned to rug up with rain expected to fall in the late morning and afternoon.
