Ronda Rousey: ‘I thought about killing myself’

Ronda Rousey has revealed she contemplated suicide in the moments after her UFC193 loss to Holly Holm in Melbourne.

Rousey entered the bout as a heavy favourite given her outstanding 11-0 career record, with 10 of her victories coming inside the first round.

But Holm scored an upset victory, knocking Rousey out in the second round to win the women’s bantamweight world title in front of 56,000 fans.

Rousey, who lost her father to suicide at the age of eight, admitted she, fleetingly, felt she couldn’t go on with life after the loss.

“Honestly, my thought, I was like, in the medical room and I was like down in the corner,” she told Ellen Degeneres in an interview that will screen on Tuesday.

“I was in the corner and I was like ‘what am I anymore if I’m not this?’

“I was literally sitting there and thinking about killing myself and that exact second I’m like, ‘I’m nothing, what do I do anymore and no gives a s*** about me anymore without this (unbeaten record).

“And to be honest, I looked up and I saw my man Travis (Browne) was standing up there and I looked up at him and I was like, ‘I need to have his babies. I need to stay alive’.

“Really, that was it. I haven’t told anybody that. I think I only told him that.”

Rousey had previously criticised Bethe Correia for referring to suicide.

Before a fight against Rousey, Correia said she hoped her opponent wouldn’t “commit suicide” after the fight, prompting an angry response from Rousey after victory.

“Suicide is no joke or selling point. My father will be with me the day I hand you the comeuppance you deserve,” she tweeted at the time.

Rousey also told Degeneres that she feels that she is “still undefeated – because being defeated is a choice.”

And she’s keen for another fight with Holm, choosing to turn November’s defeat into a positive.

“I do believe all the best things come from the worst things,” she added.

“Maybe winning all the time isn’t what’s best for everybody.

“First, I want to fight Holly. I want to beat her and make everything right again.”

Rousey’s next UFC fight is not scheduled – but Holm will fight fellow American Miesha Tate at UFC196 in Las Vegas on March 5.
