Geelong star Mitch Clark has revealed the cruel attack he has endured on social media.

Clark has experienced a well-documented battle with mental illness during his playing career with Brisbane, Melbourne and Geelong and has been sent a doctored photo of himself with what appears to be a noose around his neck.

Sharing his disappointment on Instagram, Clarke wrote: “Receiving photos like this with a message attached which I will not repeat show me that we still have a long way to go in understanding mental health.

“It also pushes me further in wanting to educate those that don’t know any better. Let’s break down the stigma. For those who are struggling, please know that you’re not alone. We’re in this together.”

Clark’s battle with depression received wide exposure last year following Geelong’s clash with Collingwood.

He said at the time: “Depression makes very little sense and rears its head whenever it chooses and unfortunately last night was one of those times. Like I have said I’m nowhere near ‘cured’ and am still learning how to best deal with my dark days.”

Clarke’s Instagram experience follows news that The Footy Show’s Garry Lyon has been stood down while he deals with a serious psychological condition.
