A hungry young spectator at the Big Bash League match in Melbourne has stolen the show after footage of him eating a whole watermelon, skin and all, went viral.

The boy was captured on live TV enthusiastically munching on the fruit as he watched the Melbourne Stars-Melbourne Renegades clash at the MCG on Saturday.

The hashtag #watermelonboy began trending on Twitter in Melbourne.

“Cricket has a new hero. Splendid work on demolishing an entire watermelon young man. Well played,” one user said.

“#Watermelonboy you are an absolute inspiration mate,” another wrote.

A record crowd of 80,883 turned out to watch the game, causing headaches for organisers.

Cricket Australia was forced to apologise to fans who were still stranded outside the ground well after the start of play as new security measures failed to cope with the turn out.
