Bart Cummings to get state funeral

Bart Cummings will he honoured with a state funeral, possibly at Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral.

The iconic horse trainer, who won 12 Melbourne Cups in a glittering career, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Cummings’ son Anthony told Fairfax Media that NSW premier Mike Baird had been in touch with the family.

“It was a very generous offer from the premier,” Anthony said.

“We have discussed it and have decided to accept a state funeral.

“It’s possibly going to be held at St Mary’s Cathedral the week after next.”

Cummings’ death has prompted tributes from Australia.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Cummings was a “legend of the track and a giant of the sport”.

“Few people have dominated a sport like Bart Cummings did. He will be remembered as a truly great trainer, the winner of literally thousands of races,” Mr Abbott said.

“Race day will not be the same without him. On behalf of all Australians, we extend our sincerest sympathies to Bart’s wife of 61 years, Valmae, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Rival trainer Gai Waterhouse paid tribute to Cummings achievements.

“I feel great sadness for Bart’s family,” she said.

“He was so well regarded and loved by all and he achieved what no one else will ever do and that is winning 12 Melbourne Cups.
