Adam Goodes felt ‘very loved’

Adam Goodes said he felt the love from football supporters during his weekend off from playing action.

Goodes, who returned to Swans training on Tuesday, confirmed he would play against Geelong on Saturday night after sitting out the match against Adelaide after being worn down by persistent booing.

But the two-time Brownlow medallist says he was humbled by the support he had received in the past few days from his teammates, players at other clubs and the broader AFL community.

“It was a very humbling experience to see the different things that our football club did, that other football clubs did and other players took upon themselves to show their support,” Goodes said.

“I felt very loved over the weekend.

“From all involved at the Sydney Swans, from other clubs and players from all levels of the game, from other codes, from the AFL, from so many in the community, the support has been amazing and it has been felt.

“It has been a great reminder of why I am one of so many people that just love our game.”

Goodes said the floodgate of debate his booing had prompted showed race was still a big issue in contemporary Australian society.

“I think these discussions needed to be had and I’m really hopeful those discussions are behind us now and we can all move on,” he said.

“People have had their opinions, they’ve spoken about the issue … Hopefully now we can move forward and for me it’s all about playing football.

“That’s my job, that’s what I love doing, that’s the way I really like to express myself out on the footy field and I’m really looking forward to doing that on the weekend.

“Whether this is my last year or not, I really want to go out there and enjoy the last five games of the season and another finals campaign and then we’ll see what happens.”
