It’s time to show Goodes some respect: Jetta

Lewis Jetta has spoken about his spear-throw celebration in Perth on Sunday, saying fans need to show his teammate Adam Goodes “more respect”.

Goodes was booed every time he touched the ball during the Sydney Swans’ 52-point loss to the West Coast Eagles, and Jetta had had enough early in the fourth quarter.

After kicking a set-shot goal, he turned to the crowd and slapped his arms before miming throwing a spear in the direction of the crowd, a shorter version of the celebration Goodes performed against Carlton in Round 9.

The celebration only seemed to increase the volume of the boos aimed at Goodes.

Later in the match, Jetta was involved in a spiteful confrontation with Eagle Elliott Yeo, and appeared to still be unhappy after the match.

In a video posted on the Swans’ website, Jetta said the booing has to stop.

“First of all we had the momentum, I kicked a goal and wanted to celebrate,” Jetta said.

“All through the game Goodesy was having touches and getting booed all the time.

“He’s a superstar of the game and a superstar for us. Fans need to show more respect for what he’s done for the game. All this booing stuff needs to be thrown out the window.”

Goodes said he was proud of his teammate.

“I know he wanted to kick a goal in Indigenous Round and do his own little dance but to see him do that made me very proud,” Goodes said.

“To hear him talk about the reason why he chose to do it and support me in what’s continually going on out there is fantastic.

“It makes me really proud that he was thinking of me when he was doing that.

“He’s definitely got the moves. He definitely performed it a lot better than what I did.”
