Adam Scott ‘gets lucky’ at a rain-soaked St Andrews

Australia’s Adam Scott says he got lucky with conditions at the British Open as he led an Australian surge up the leaderboard in the second round.

Water is not usually a hazard at St Andrews, but it played a major role in shaping round two of the championship.

The home of golf was flooded, with ground-keepers forced to mop up the famed Old Course after a downpour of rain delayed play for three hours before play could resume.

American Dustin Johnson leads the tournament at 10-under-par, through 13 holes, however because of the rain delay, he will have to return tomorrow morning to complete his second round.

Jason Day remains the best placed Australian but will have to return tomorrow with seven holes still to play in his second round. He sits two off the leader at 8-under par.

When the rain cleared, a group of Australians made their way up the leaderboard, but Scott – who fired a 5-under 67 to move to 7-under for the tournament – says he got lucky with conditions in the second round.

“I think I caught a break,” he said.

“I woke up not happy and then I had three hours to really think I’ve got lucky here and try and take advantage of it.

“Any time you can go bogey free at a major, it’s going to be a good round. I made a few good putts today because I left a couple out there yesterday, so it all kind of turned around, and I’m very happy putting together a 67.”
