Nick Kyrgios has shown his unique bond with social media followers, this time in the form of a bizarre display of support involving Vegemite and Nutella.
Fans of the charismatic tennis star are covering their faces in sandwich spreads after one fan vowed to smear Vegemite on himself if Kyrgios replied to a message.

• ‘Bigger’ threat than terrorism
“If you reply to this i’ll cover my face in Vegemite,” Mitchell McConachy wrote to Kyrgios on Facebook.
“Oi! Where’s the face full of Vegemite?” Kyrgios responded. “If you send it to me I will post it on my page.”
Both sides held up their end of the bargain:

Kyrgios captioned the photo by saying: “I get some pretty awesome support messages from my fans every day, but this one seriously is up there. Loyal support from home! #AustralianFans #Vegemite.”
The trend then “took off”, according to Kyrgios:

The rising star, 20, has enjoyed a controversial yet stunning Wimbledon so far and will come up against 21st seed Richard Gasquet on Monday night (AEDT).
If he gets past the Frenchman he will most likely come up against fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
However some social media users aren’t happy with the craze, saying it indirectly supports ‘blackface’ painting.
Although it did not seem that was the intention of the fan who originally used the Vegemite.
“So no ones gonna talk about how this is reminiscent of black face huh? (Had to be said),” Chando Mapoma commented on Facebook.
