The other pre-event favourite, South Australian Luke Houlihan, stumbled early in the race but recovered to finish second.

Brendan Matthews was third.

Australia’s fastest boy Jack Hale was run out in the semi-finals.

In the women’s event, Melbourne teenager Grace O’Dwyer caused a shock.

The 16-year-old daughter of former Gift finalist Peter O’Dwyer took the title her famous father could never claim, winning in a time of 13.4 seconds.

“I don’t think it’s sunk in yet,” she told Channel Seven immediately after winning the $40,000 prize.

“I’m just so glad I could do it for him,” she added through tears of joy.

She edged mother of three Anna Pasquali and Lynette Viney, both of whom finished in a time of 13.50.
