Reports of cocaine use at Gold Coast Suns AFL club
Gold Coast Suns AFL players have been linked to cocaine use in a police intelligence report.
According to a News Limited report, Gold Coast Suns players came to the attention of police in 2012 when some players allegedly used cocaine among themselves at private properties.
• Karmichael Hunt charged with supplying cocaine
• Eade has ‘fingers crossed’ on cocaine scandal
The report alleges Gold Coast Suns officials were not told about the investigation, and drug use occurred outside of the AFL season.
On Wednesday, Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade said he had his “fingers crossed” no players would be implicated in the case.
“We haven’t had any players come forward at this stage,” he said.
“It’s just been business as usual to be honest.
“That’s all you can do with anybody, ask them a question and that’s the way it is.
“It’s fingers crossed. Any sporting team in Australia, male or female, you’re never going to be 100 per cent certain of anything.”
The news comes as a widespread drug scandal engulfs Australian sport, with rugby league, rugby union and AFL players all being investigated by police.
The revelations come after a large Australian Crime Commission investigation into cocaine trafficking in Queensland which exposed widespread drug use in professional sport.
Queensland Reds rugby union star and former Suns AFL player Karmichael Hunt was last week implicated in the investigation, and will face court on four counts of drug use and supply.
Six current and former Gold Coast Titans rugby league players have also been charged as part of the investigation.
The Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission told News Limited it expected to arrest more current and former sportspeople by early next week.
