A-League wrap: Brisbane Roar lick their wounds

Melbourne City are intent on using their first win as a springboard to shake up the A-League.

But judging by the aftermath of their 3-1 victory against Brisbane, it’s aleady begun.

A nasty on-field argument between Roar left-back Shane Stefanutto and goalkeeper Jamie Young showed the strain on the defending champs after a horror start to the season.

Brisbane are the first A-League side to lose their opening four matches in the competition’s history.

Stefanutto said both on and off the field, the Roar were hurting.

“As a team we’re not in a good position, as a club we’re not in a good position,” he told ABC radio.

The 34-year-old said he regretted his fight and the outburst happened because “we all care so much”.

“I put my hand up straight away… I know it wasn’t a good look, Jamie and I are fine, I’ve apologised to Jamie.”

“I just said it wasn’t personal, I was just frustrated.”

Stefanutto made a heart-felt argument the champions were united and keen to start picking up points.

“I get disappointed when they say there’s discontent within the squad,” he said.

“A team that’s lost four games, you can’t come out and say we’re happy.

“We’re frustrated with the position we’re in, we’re not frustrated with each other.

“As a team we’re united and we’ll stay strong and keep believing.”

Their conquerors City showed how one win can change the mood.

City were winless dating back to a 4-0 Melbourne derby triumph in March but can now look forward with positivity.

Goalscorer Mate Dugandzic said this win would hopefully be the first of many.

“It lifts up the mood substantially,” he said.

“There was always confidence within the squad that we’ve got enough depth in quality to challenge the league… we’ll use this as a stepping stone.”

Consolation for the Roar is they’re in good company at the foot of the table.

Western Sydney’s 1-0 loss to Wellington on Friday night means the Asian Champions are also pointless, albeit from a match fewer due to their continental commitments.

The Wanderers tough start doesn’t come with a similar crisis after their remarkable Asian Champions League success.

But the pair need to start picking up points, now 12 points behind surprise league leaders Perth Glory.

Glory beat Central Coast 1-0 to wrap up the round, and end a long-running club hoodoo.

Nebojsa Marinkovic’s stunning free kick earned Glory’s first regular season win in Gosford in ten A-League seasons.

Kenny Lowe’s men are part of a four-club breakaway, with Melbourne Victory, Adelaide United and Sydney FC just a point behind.

Victory fought back from 2-0 down in the Hunter to earn a 2-2 draw.

First half goals to Kew Jaliens and Joel Griffiths had Victory on the ropes before Fahid Ben Khalfallah and Besart Berisha scored either side of half-time to share the spoils.

Berisha said there was a great spirit in the team.

“Very pleased with the start, and also with the team’s start,” the Albanian said.

With five goals in four games, he sits top of the A-League scoring charts but Berisha said it shouldn’t shock anyone.

“Having such fantastic quality players in the team it’s no surprise,” he said.

Sydney and Adelaide continued their unbeaten starts to the season in a 0-0 draw at Coopers Stadium.
