Australian teen Eleanor Patterson crowned her major championships debut with Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s high jump in Glasgow on Saturday morning.

Patterson, 18, trailed England’s Isobel Pooley until Patterson successfully cleared 1.94m, a feat Pooley could not match.

Pooley, who looked superb through to a personal best 1.92m height, crashed out while trying to pass 1.94m on three attempts.

St Lucia’s Lavern Spencer claimed the bronze at 1.92m, and handed Patterson the gold when she bombed out trying to surpass 1.96m.

Confirmation of the gold medal did not seem to affect Patterson who remained calm and collected as she attempted to pass 1.96m – her personal best height – but could not succeed on three attempts.
