Australian cyclist Amy Cure wins world points race
Tasmanian Amy Cure joined a select group with her victory in the women’s 25km points race at the track cycling world championships in Colombia.
The 21-year-old from the town of Penguin claimed her maiden world title, becoming just the second Australian winner of the event after Katherine Bates won in 2007.
It was Cure’s third medal of the 2014 world titles, having previously claimed bronze in the team and individual pursuit events.
“It is pretty unbelievable, It has been so long, to finally get a world championship, it is all I have ever dreamed about,” said Cure, who claimed four world titles on the track in 2009 and 2010 at under-19 level.
“Four times junior world champion, but all I have ever wanted was that senior title.”
Cure conserved her energy in the early stages of the 100 lap race, but still figured in the points in three of the first four of 10 sprints – held every 10 laps.
Leading by five points heading into the final sprint, Cure held on to win on 38 points ahead of Germany’s Stephanie Pohl (35pts), who collected two points on the final sprint, with Canada’s Jasmin Glaesser (32pts) taking bronze.
“My main focus coming here was the team pursuit and the individual pursuit, the points race probably wasn’t my main focus, so to pull this off, I am stoked,” she said.
In 2013, Cure enjoyed a tremendous season with the Jayco-AIS women’s road team in Europe, earning her a contract with Lotto-Belisol Ladies for 2014.
Most recently, Cure claimed the individual and team pursuit titles at the national championships in Adelaide in January.
In other events, South Australia’s Matthew Glaetzer progressed to the semi-finals of the men’s sprint competition less than 48 hours after being involved in a spectacular crash in the men’s keirin.
