Saturday horse racing tips: Lightning Stakes Day

Another good day for readers on Wednesday with the very promising Son Senoras scoring a great win at Mornington. Today we take a look at the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning from Flemington, along with the Magic Millions three year old trophy from Ascot.

Flemington Race 7 — Group 1 VRC Black Caviar Lightning (1000m)

This is a cracking edition of the Black Caviar Lightning, with a plenty of speed engaged. The lightly weighted two-year-olds 12 BOOMWAA and 13 BUGATTY will push forward, along with 8 SNITZERLAND and 10 BERNABEU. Speed is largely irrelevant down the straight, but there will be plenty up vying for the lead here.

10 BERNABEU was a Trial Files favourite last preparation when saluting on Cup Day at $15. He has had a trial at Warwick Farm which was nothing to write home about but then came down to Melbourne and set the Flemington track a light in a recent jumpout. He went up against 1 SHAMEXPRESS in that jumpout and bounced to the early lead before showing a dazzling turn of foot when slipped a little reign about 300m from home. Although this is a massive step up in class, every horse has to start somewhere and that win over the carnival showed that he was up to Group 1 level.

Another we rate as a huge chance today is 5 UNPRETENTIOUS. He won the Group 2 Schillachi first up last preparation before being found to be lame after the Group 1 VRC Sprint. In the past he has had his runs very spaced but this time in he is coming off a short let up and should retain some residual fitness as a result. The recent trial was very good and he went as well as Lankan Rupee, who came out and bolted in last week at Caulfield. The speed up front is only going to suit 5 UNPRETENTIOUS and he famously came from last off a solid tempo down the straight during the carnival of 2012. He will get back and really power home and does appear over the odds.

There is great interest around the two-year-olds here, in particular 12 BOOMWAA. He gets in with just 46kg and an experienced jockey in Dean Yendall will take the ride. This gelding was brilliant when winning over the track and distance on Stakes Day during the VRC Carnival and both runs this time in have been very solid. He set a cracking pace last start at Randwick, running sizzling early sectionals, and the performance to hang on to run second was nothing short of brilliant. He can give them something to catch here and the huge weight advantage brings him right into contention. An absolute must for the multiples and he can most certainly win the race without surprising.

7 SAMAREADY has come up the short favourite here but we weren’t overly enamoured with her last jumpout:

“SAMAREADY jumped a length in front of the field and settled nicely through the early stages. VENTIC went up and shaded her over the concluding stages and she had to be revved up to gain the ascendancy back from that runner. Average bit of work from a high class horse. “

Her first two runs off a long spell last campaign were very good, with wins at Caulfield and then an absolute smashing of subsequent dual Group 1 winner, Buffering, in the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley. We suspect the rapidly-deteriorating track really flattered that Moonee Valley win, with most horses performing well below their best, and although the official rating was a dead 5 the surface was far worse than that. She is up to this grade, no doubt, but she did pull up with a health issue at her last start before spelling in the Manikato. Happy to work around her.

The other prominent player in the market is our other blackbooker in 8 SNITZERLAND. This mare flies fresh with three wins and a second from five first up attempts. At her most recent outing she was beaten just 0.1 lengths by Lankan Rupee after being left out in front, and that form line was strengthened last weekend when her conqueror burnt the turf at Caulfield. She was dominant in her recent all the way trial romp and like so many here she looks to have come back in super order. Another with a winning chance, but like 7 SAMAREADY, she does appear a touch under the odds.

Although this is a massive step up in class we are really keen on 10 BERNABEU and suspect he might stamp himself as one of the best sprinters in the country with a dominant performance here. 5 UNPRETENTIOUS trialled well and looks huge odds so we are happy to have a smaller bet on him too.

Ascot Race 5 — 3yo Magic Millions Trophy (1200m)

The Magic Millions show rolls into Perth this week for the Magic Millions race day on Saturday, followed by two days of yearling sales on Tuesday and Wednesday. Below we preview the three-year-old trophy, however our full preview will contain a preview of the two year old classic, plus a number of other races on the program.

There is no doubting that 1 PETROL POWER is the best horse in the race, and had he drawn a barrier inside of six he would have almost been a good thing. Barrier 13 makes it very interesting and opens up the field somewhat. Had he drawn inside he could have gone to the lead had he chosen or sat in the second pair in the ideal position. With plenty of speed inside him, he risks getting caught three deep if he pushes forward. First up last preparation he did settle midfield before storming home over the same track and distance to just miss the filly Arcadia Rose on the line.

2 LENIENCE and 4 CHINETTI are the likely leaders here and although 2 LENIENCE has drawn the closer to the inside, we think 4 CHINETTI might try and take him on and go to the front.

The Daniel Peace trained 3 TESTAMEZZO resumes first up here fresh from a very good trial. It is interesting running him first over 1200m as all of his wins have occurred over the shorter trip. On paper his one attempt at 1200m looks terrible, however all is not as bad as it seems. Although he finished 10th, he was caught wide that day and only beaten three lengths. He also ran the quickest 600m sectional of the race. From the middle barrier he should be able to settle midfield and we are confident that he can run a strong 1200m first up.

6 LOST HERITAGE backs up after a dominant win last week. His run last week was first up without trialling and he would have benefited greatly from that. He hasn’t backed up after seven days in his career to date, but provided he has pulled up well from last week he has drawn ideally to be running on strongly. 11 WILD STRATUS is unbeaten and we expect her to roll forward today and look the winner at some stage.

A very competitive and even race, as the Magic Millions races so often are. Had 1 PETROL POWER drawn a gate we would have been very keen but the outside barrier gives others their chance. He has the class to still be a key winning chance though. Having said that we are happy to be on 3 TESTAMEZZO each way, we expect a big run from him first up.
