Wednesday horse racing tips: Mornington Cup Day
It was a good Saturday for followers of The Trial Files and The New Daily, with the promising Fiddlers Elbow living up to his talent in the West, while in the colts’ Blue Diamond Prelude, Chivalry stormed home from last to finish in the money at a great each-way price.
Today we bring you two races from a good meeting at Mornington.

Mornington Race 1 — 3YO Maiden (1000m)
For many, the running of the time-honoured Mornington Cup (in which the in-form Prince of Penzance will start favourite) will steal the spotlight today — but for The Trial Files followers, all eyes will be on the 3yo Maiden that will open the program.
12 SON SENORAS caught our eye in a recent Cranbourne trial:
“SON SENORAS absolutely pinged the lids from a wide stall and pounced on the front. She continued to increase her margin under her own steam and was angled to the outside of the track rounding the home turn. She had a furlong on the other horses and did it all under her own steam. Outstanding trial. 10/10.”
This 3yo daughter of shaft has had the one career start to date (when down the track behind Montsegur), but based on her trial she has come on in leaps and bounds since that outing. Her time at Cranbourne was competitive with Lankan Rupee (who subsequently bolted in on Saturday) and every bit as impressive in the way she did it. From gate two today she should be able to pounce on the early lead and prove mighty difficult to run down.
This isn’t your typical maiden … in fact, it is very strong on paper. The Mick Kent-trained 9 HOLY COW presents the biggest danger to our selection. This Teoflio filly was unlucky not to win a listed race on debut at Flemington. That day, she raced in restricted room when a close up fourth behind Anatina. She arguably should have won a listed race at her second start too when she got back to last over the six furlongs at Moonee Valley before producing a lethal turn of foot to only go down by 0.4-lengths. She is the likely race favourite here but will need a lot of luck from barrier one as we have her getting back to midfield in this race.
The race doesn’t end there. The Greg Eurell trained 4 GOLFING was super on debut at this track and distance at his first campaign. He was a touch disappointing when resuming as favourite at Kilmore but he had trialled only fairly leading in and should derive good improvement heading into today’s race. Chances also given to 1 I’M CORLEONE and 2 SMART OPTION.

Mornington Race 6 — The Inglis Premier (1200m)
This juvenile race has quickly become one of the highlights of Mornington Cup Day. In 2012, the brilliant Snitzerland lit up the Mornington track in winning this race by 4.5 lengths before stepping up to Group 1 glory in what proved to be a brilliant career. New South Wales also provided the winner in 2013 when the Bjorn Baker-trainer Twilight Royale proved too strong for a small field.
This year’s edition of the race looks far from stellar on paper, although one of the unseen debutantes; 6 BENNY DEE, 7 GOLD FORCE or 8 THE SPITFIRE might well come out and blow them away.
The recent jumpout of 10 SEE ME FLASH impressed us:
“Liked the work of SEE ME FLASH who just lobbed along in behind the field the whole way. She covered the ground very well and looks to have above average ability”.
This Henry Dwyer-trained daughter of Sebring didn’t let us down on debut when holding out Inevitability right on the vinegar stroke. This filly will derive much improvement from that run and from barrier four and up to 1200m should enjoy the run of the race. The six furlongs looks far more suitable today and although she does need to improve on her first outing, she comes in with strong each way claims here.
Paul Perry puts the polish on 1 MODOC, a runner who creates much intrigue. He came from the tail to win well on debut at Newcastle before coming out and absolutely blowing them away at his second start at Scone when careering away to a 6.5-length win. This is obviously another step up in class for this Haradasun gelding and he won’t want to concede as big a start as he has at his last two around the tight Mornington, but if he continues to improve he can figure in the finish.
2 GRAND ROSCO looks the horse to beat on exposed form. He got back when debuting in the Blue Diamond Preview but made solid ground to the line behind Mohave. Provided jockey Damien Oliver can get him into a nice trailing spot from barrier eight, this Written Tycoon colt will be very hard to hold out in the straight.
Not an Inglis Classic to excite the senses and it does look a tough betting race with three completely unknown first starters. In terms of selections we see 2 GRAND ROSCO as the horse to beat but could also have something each way on 10 SEE ME FLASH.
