Shot putter Valerie Adams in line for top athletics honour

Record-breaking New Zealand shot putter Valerie Adams is one of three women shortlisted for the International Association of Athletics Federations female athlete of the year.

The 29-year-old double Olympic champion won a record fourth title at the world championships in Moscow in August.

Adams, who has never won the award, was also on the shortlist for the previous two years.

She tweeted: “Feel so humbled to make the short list for the IAAF AOY along with Shelly and Zuzana.

“It’s always great to celebrate your season and sport with other fellow athletes regardless of the outcome.”

She is up against Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Zuzana Hejnova, the Czech Republic’s 400m hurdles world champion.

Fraser-Pryce completed a clean sweep of the 100 metres, 200m and 4x100m relay in Moscow.

The three men shortlisted are Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt, British runner Mohamed Farah and Ukranian high jumper Bohdan Bondarenko.

The winner will be named at a gala dinner in Monaco on November 16.
