US election turns into popularity contest as stars take sides

With less than a week to go until Americans head to the polls, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are stacking up last-minute celebrity endorsements – with the star power leaning heavily in Harris’s favour.
The public votes of confidence from billionaires, actors, singers and athletes weighing in on the US election race won’t guarantee either candidate success.
But experts previously told TND they do affect – and sometimes conflict – with each candidate’s branding.
“You may be seen as a celebrity, but you are a very wealthy individual: Taylor Swift flies around on a private jet,”Australian National University political branding expert Andrew Hughes said.
“Tell me any other political campaign that uses someone who flies in a private jet to endorse a political party that likes to associate with the working class?”
Australia Institute senior researcher Emma Shortis said the endorsements showed the divide between the candidates, with the Democrats more closely aligned with Hollywood, while Trump endorsements came from a “very white space of celebrity”.
“It is also clear that it bothers Trump more than previous Republican candidates,” she said.
Celebs for Harris
Bad Bunny
The latest celebrity support for Kamala Harris came from Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny, who signalled support for Harris by sharing a clip on social media of the vice president’s plans for Puerto Rico after a speaker at Trump’s New York rally called the country a “floating island of garbage”.
Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland
This came just days after Harris scored another major coup in the form of endorsement from Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland.

George Clooney
The actor was one of the first celebrities to officially endorse Harris after she announced she was running for the presidency, just weeks after Clooney publicly implored President Joe Biden to step back from the race after his disastrous debate performance against Trump.
