US President Joe Biden says he is not confident about a peaceful transfer of power if Donald Trump loses the November 5 presidential election.

“If Trump loses, I’m not confident at all,” Biden said in an interview on Wednesday (US time) with CBS News when asked whether he thought there would be a peaceful transfer of power after the vote.

“He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously. He means it. All this stuff about if we lose there’d be a bloodbath,” Biden said.

In a March campaign appearance in Ohio, Trump warned of a “bloodbath” if he did not win in November.

At the time Trump was discussing the need to protect the US car industry from overseas competition. He said later he was referring to the industry when he used the term.

Months later, during the June 27 debate with Biden, Trump was asked whether he would accept the 2024 election results.

“If it’s a fair and legal and good election, absolutely,” he eventually said. He also continued to claim the “fraud and everything else was ridiculous” in 2020.

Trump, the Republican candidate in November, continues to falsely claim he won the 2020 election against Biden.

On January 6, 2021, a mob of his supporters stormed the US Capitol. He has since said that was “a beautiful day” and described supporters jailed for crimes related to the attack as “unbelievable patriots” and “hostages”.

Last week, he renewed his pledge to pardon those facing convictions related to the attack if he is elected in November.

Trump was criminally charged in Washington DC and Georgia with illegally trying to overturn the results.

Biden dropped out of the race to the White House in July after fellow Democrats called for him to step aside following his poor debate performance against Trump, which raised questions about the President’s age and health.

Vice-President Kamala Harris has since captured the Democratic nomination and is running against Trump.

She officially confirmed her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, on Wednesday.

Biden’s interview with CBS, his first since he withdrew from the presidential race, will air in the US on August 11.

He will discuss his decision to stand down, as well as his outlook for the US.
