US politician Gavin Newsom hilariously out-Trumps Trump

After more than a week of trolling Donald Trump online, California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken his ruthless parody of the US President to another level.

In recent weeks Newsom has imitated Trump’s distinct style of social media posting – writing narcissistic, insult-laden posts, often in all capital letters and littered with strangely placed quotation marks.

Among his many offerings, the Democrat has reposted an AI-generated meme of his face carved onto Mount Rushmore declaring “WHAT AN HONOUR!”, and has taken to insulting his Republican opponents, saying of Vice President JD Vance: “NOT EVEN HIS EYELINER LINES LOOK AS PRETTY AS CALIFORNIA ‘MAP’ LINES,”

Newsom has also spread a meme falsely claiming there were “worldwide calls” for him to receive the Nobel peace prize, parodying Trump’s obsession with securing the award.

And he has even taken to ending his posts with Trump’s often-used  “THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!”.

On Monday (Australian time), Newsom took his trolling a step further by launching his own online store, dubbed the Patriot Shop, mimicking the President’s own bizarre and extensive range of merchandise.

“THE PATRIOT SHOP IS NOW OPEN!!!!” the Democratic governor announced in a social media post. “MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING THIS IS THE GREATEST MERCHANDISE EVER MADE. PLEASE ENJOY, AMERICA!”

In a direct jab at Trump’s own offerings, the website lists a “Holy Bible” signed by “America’s Favourite Governor!” for US$100 ($A154).

Trump’s own “God Bless the USA” Bibles sold for US$60 each and included the chorus to Lee Greenwood’s song by the same name as well as the text of the US Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence and Pledge of Allegiance.

The Patriot Shop also offers a “Trump is not hot” tank top, red MAGA-style caps emblazoned with “Newsom was right about everything!” and a “The Chosen One” T-shirt that features Newsom surrounded by far-right personalities Tucker Carlson, Kid Rock, and Hulk Hogan.

Trump in 2019 declared himself “the chosen one.”

Three hours after the merchandise shop launched, Newsom boasted in an X post about its sales: “WOW! $50,000 IN PURCHASES ALREADY!! THANK YOU PATRIOTS!!!”

The store is administered on behalf of the Campaign For Democracy Committee, according to the website.

His strategy is proving a hit with Democrat voters, who appear excited that someone is willing to take Trump on so aggressively.

“I’m just following [Trump’s] example,” Newsom said last week when asked about his social media strategy.

“If you have issues with what I’m putting out, you sure as hell should have concerns with what he’s putting out as President.”

The Murdoch-owned Fox News is not so impressed.

“Stop it with the Twitter thing,” Host Dana Perino posted last week.

“I don’t know where his wife is. If I were his wife I would say, ‘You are making a fool of yourself, stop it.’” she said.

“He’s got a big job as governor of California, but if he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little more serious,” added Perino, who has never taken Trump to task for his own social media efforts.

Trace Gallagher, another Fox News host, said Newsom’s posts were “childish”, without reference to the Trump posts on which they are based.

Trump himself recently posted on his Truth Social platform: “Gavin Newscum (sic) is way down in the polls. He is viewed as the man who is destroying the once Great State of California. I will save California!!!”

However, Newsom’s trolling appears to have actually spurred a “rising tide of support” among voters in California, according to CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten.

He pointed to a recent poll that found that 75 per cent of registered Democratic voters were “excited” about the prospect of Newsom running for US president in 2028.

Newsom reaches the end of his second and final term as California governor next year. He is widely expected seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
