Melania Trump has called for an end to the “outrageous violence” against her husband, as she sat down for her first interview in two years.

She chose the friendly Fox News for Thursday’s interview to promote her upcoming memoir.

The wide-ranging interview covered a host of topics about the Trumps’ private life, Melania’s arrival in the US and the upcoming presidential election – at which husband Donald is the Republican candidate.

She quashed suggestions she is less than keen on the re-election bid. The idea has been driven by her general absence from the campaign trail – including not speaking at the Republican National Convention and skipping Trump’s election outings and his numerous court appearances.

“I support him. I know how passionate he is to make America great again,” Melania told Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt.

The pair also discussed the twin attempts on Trump’s life – the shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the arrest of an armed man on his Florida golf course.

She told Earhardt she learned of the July 13 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in a phone call from a staffer.

“You know, it’s interesting how quiet everything became,” Melania said. “All of the mainstream media. There were a few days reporting about July 13 event and then everything then became quiet, so I had a lot of questions, what’s going on? This is not normal.”

“Is it really shocking that all this outrageous violence goes against my husband?

“Especially that we hear the leaders from the opposition party and mainstream media branding him as a threat to democracy, calling him vile names, they’re only fueling a toxic atmosphere and giving power to all of these people who want to do harm to him. This needs to stop.”

Trump has also previously blamed “communist left rhetoric” for the attacks against him, despite both being condemned by senior Democrats, including US President Joe Biden and election rival and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Melania was in New York when there was an apparent second attempt on Trump’s life while he was playing golf near his Mar-a-Lago home. She learned about it from TV reports.

“I think both of the events, they were really a miracle,” she said, “if you really think about it. The July 13 was a miracle. Like that much [she gestured with her hands to show a tiny gap], and he could not be with us.”

After praising her husband – “He’s just strong! He’s not afraid to talk about the way it really is” – Melania revealed more about her journey to the US and meeting him.

She arrived from Slovenia in in 1996, becoming a US citizen 10 years later in what she described as a “very, very proud” moment.

When she met Trump through her modelling work, they quickly formed a “very special connection”. Melania said he “always was involved in politics. He was very in tune [with] what’s going on in the world and especially in this country”.

When asked what she loved most about her husband, Melania said “his humor. His personality. His kindness. He’s, he’s very special. His positivity. His energy. It’s unbelievable. So we have a beautiful relationship.”

The couple wed in 2005 and had one son, Barron, who is now studying in New York.

Melania said Trump – who has four older children from his previous marriages – had wanted more with her. She, on the other hand, was always “perfectly fine with one”.

“I’m completely fine with one because it’s a very busy life. And I know how busy [Donald] is. And, I’m in charge of everything. So that’s why it’s just perfect,” she said.

Melania’s memoir, titled simply Melania, will be released on October 8.
