A daredevil couple has been arrested for a brazen stunt climbing to the top of the Empire State Building in New York — and proposing marriage — without any safety gear.

The fearless man and woman were seen 443 metres above street level clinging to the antenna atop the building’s spire.

They unfurled a banner that flapped in the breeze and read: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.”

The couple was identified as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Beerkus, 32, who were featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story.

The film documents their relationship, planning and illegally climbing the tallest buildings all round the world.

Footage from Wednesday’s death-defying feat shows them dressed in black and wearing cat masks over their faces.

Media helicopters are seen circling around them during the approximately 10 minutes that they remained at the top of the world-famous building.

As they started making their way down from the peak, they paused on a platform and Beerkus could be seen dropping to one knee and appeared to hold a ring towards Nikolau.

According to reports, Nikolau accepted his marriage proposal, later posting photos on social media of the ring on her finger.

New York Police were reportedly waiting for the newly engaged pair when they returned to the bottom and arrested them.

A spokesperson for the building told the BBC ”unauthorised incident” did not pose any danger to tenants, visitors, or guests on the observation deck just below the spire.

”It is to be emphasised that the Empire State Building Observation Deck, atop the World’s Most Famous Building in the centre of New York City, does offer a practical way for the most memorable marriage proposals,” the spokesperson said.
