An image of US President Donald Trump will feature prominently in special passports to be issued to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Mock-ups from the US State Department revealed on Wednesday (Australian time) show an image of a stern-looking Trump surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and American flag.

Underneath is Trump’s signature in gold.

Another page features a reproduction of the famous painting of the founding fathers at the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence.

In the background of both pages is the American flag.

“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed US passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.

“These passports will feature customised artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the US passport the most secure documents in the world.”

The passport’s cover has also been redesigned. The words “United States of America” are bigger than normal, and sit above the national crest.

On the back cover is an American flag with “250” centred between the 13 stars that were on the flag’s 1777 version.

The State Department said the anniversary passports would be available only from the Washington Passport Agency and only until supplies run out. It did not say how many would be released.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has put his face and signature on federal buildings and programs across the US.

His administration has renamed America’s national cultural centre, the Kennedy Centre, as the Trump-Kennedy Centre. The Institute of Peace, meanwhile, has become the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.

In February, a large banner with Trump’s face on it was hung outside Justice Department headquarters in Washington. Several government programs, including the Trump Accounts savings plan for kids, the Trump Gold Card visa program and TrumpRx for prescription drugs are all named in his honour.

In a first for a sitting US president, the Treasury Department has also said Trump’s signature will appear on new American paper currency.

The special passports are expected to be released in July to correspond with Trump’s other 250th anniversary celebrations. They include a 16-day transformation of the National Mall in Washington into the Great American State Fair with livestock competitions and rodeo events.

“Under President Donald J. Trump, America’s 250th birthday will be marked by a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that encapsulates the American spirit — including a spectacular fireworks display at Mount Rushmore that honours our history at the monument that symbolises those who built it,” a US Interior Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Among earlier events for the celebration will be a UFC fight on the White House South Lawn – dubbed “UFC Freedom 250” – on June 14. That is also Trump’s 80th birthday.
