Two people have been killed and a third person seriously injured by an exploding tyre on a Delta Air Lines passenger jet at a US airport.

The fatal incident happened when workers were removing the tyre in the wheel and brake shop at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, in Georgia.

Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported that the fatal explosion sent metal flying “like a missile”.

Local media have identified the victims as two workers — a Delta employee and a contractor.

Delta issued a statement saying it was “heartbroken” at the loss of two team members and the injury to another.

“We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” said the statement.

“The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on site.

“We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”

Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens offered his condolences to the deceased employees’ families and loved ones.

“My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope for their swift and full recovery.”

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, representing airline workers across the country, called for an investigation.

“We stand in unity with Delta workers during this difficult time and we call on Delta and the relevant authorities to quickly launch a thorough investigation into how this happened,” the union said in a statement.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration told Reuters it was opening an investigation.
