US presidential debate round one: Who won? Who knows…

The insults, interjections and personal jibes flew thick and fast at the first US presidential debate between Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Moderator Chris Wallace struggled to control proceedings, as the two candidates traded barbs and continually interrupted one another.

It is hard to say who won – but President Trump’s tweets confirm he is confident that he was the victor.

Americans will decide when they vote in the presidential election on November 3.

5/11When asked to denounce white supremacists, Mr Trump said: “Proud Boys, stand back and standby.”

6/11"Everything he’s saying so far is simply a lie,” said Mr Biden.

7/11“Joe,” Mr Trump said, “You’re the liar.”

8/11Greta Thunberg says only Joe Biden grasps the size of the crisis facing Planet Earth.

9/11“There’s nothing smart about you, Joe.” Mr Trump said.

10/11Late in the debate, Mr Wallace said: “I think that the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions."

11/11Who won the debate? Who knows. The combative digressions made it difficult for either candidate to make a point.
