The driver of a car that allegedly ploughed into a crowd a football parade in Liverpool has been identified as 53-year-old Paul Doyle.

He faces seven charges, including wounding and causing grievous bodily harm, after Monday’s horrifying incident that left 79 people injure at the parade celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League victory.

A huge crowd of ecstatic football fans was celebrating the English club’s title along the 16-kilometre parade route when festive scenes turned to chao just after 6pm local time on Monday.

The victims ranged in age from nine to 78.

Police have said the car that struck the pedestrians had followed an ambulance crew into a secure area after a road block was temporarily lifted so someone suffering a heart attack could be treated.

Footage circulating on social media appears to show some in the crowd trying to get close to the vehicle as it moved along. One person opens the driver’s door, before the driver shuts it and accelerates into the packed crowd.

Later, people are seen kicking the vehicle and smashing the back window as they try to chase down the car. In the moments after the crash, police officers mass around the vehicle.

Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said Doyle was accused of two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is also accused of two counts of attempted unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving.

Doyle, a father of three from the West Derby area of Liverpool, will appear in court in Liverpool later on Friday.

Prosecutors said the charges would be kept “under review as the investigation progresses”.

Chief Crown Prosecutor for Mersey-Cheshire, Sarah Hammond, said the investigation was at an early stage.

“Prosecutors and police are continuing to work at pace to review a huge volume of evidence,” she said.

“This includes multiple pieces of video footage and numerous witness statements. It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve.”

Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, Jenny Sims said she fully understood how the incident had left many shocked, saddened and with concerns and questions.

“Our detectives are working tirelessly, with diligence and professionalism, to seek the answer to all of those questions. When we are able to, we will provide further information,” she said.

Sims said seven people remained in hospital.
