An Australian man has allegedly been stabbed to death at a popular holiday spot in Thailand, reportedly after a disagreement with a stranger at a restaurant.

Asian media report that Liam Michael Ross, a 35-year-old from Perth, suffered grave wounds to his abdomen, leg and arm in the resort town of Krabi.

He was reportedly killed about 2am on Monday in an altercation on the street with an American man he had met earlier at a restaurant.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the man’s death in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. It said it was providing consular assistance to Ross’s family.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” DFAT said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment.”

Asean Now reports that eyewitnesses recalled the pair had been drinking earlier at a nearby restaurant.

Their paths crossed again as Ross was walking back to his hotel, leading to a verbal confrontation.

Asean Now said the spat quickly escalated into a physical fight, during which the accused allegedly drew a knife and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Ross.

The Deputy Inspector of Ao Nang Police Station, Lieutenant Wichote Meepop, said he received a distress call about a brawl near Noppharat Thara Beach, opposite the Razorback Conch Sculpture.

When officers arrived, Ross was found in a critical condition with stab wounds.

He was transferred from Wattana Hospital, in Ao Nang, to Krabi Hospital but died from his injuries.

The suspect who was apprehended at the scene has been identified as American Randall Owen Johnson, 43.

Asean Now reports he was still under the influence of alcohol and was carrying a folding knife.

Investigations are under way.
