Trump sues to block US bank subpoenas

US President Donald Trump is suing Deutsche Bank and Capital One to try to block congressional subpoenas for his business records.

The lawsuit by Mr Trump, sons Donald jnr and Eric and daughter Ivanka was filed on Monday in the federal court in New York City.

The Trump Organisation and the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust are among the other plaintiffs.

“The subpoenas were issued to harass President Donald J. Trump, to rummage through every aspect of his personal finances, his businesses, and the private information of the President and his family, and to ferret about for any material that might be used to cause him political damage,” the complaint states.

“No grounds exist to establish any purpose other than a political one.”

Two House committees subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions earlier this month as part of investigations into Mr Trump’s finances.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said at the time that the subpoenas were part of an investigation “into allegations of potential foreign influence on the US political process”.

The Trumps want a federal judge to declare the subpoenas unlawful and enforceable. The lawsuit also seeks to block the financial institutions from disclosing information and complying with the subpoenas.

It is the second lawsuit that Mr Trump has filed in recent weeks to try to shut down the subpoena.

He and his private businesses also sued House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings earlier this month to try to block a subpoena for the President’s financial records from accounting firm Mazars.

The banks did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
