Mayor of Indiana town, Pete Buttigieg, marries couple 45 minutes before their daughter is born

A United States couple has decided to get married in their local mayor’s office on their way to the hospital, 45 minutes before a scheduled caesarean section.

Pete Buttigieg, the Mayor of South Bend in the state of Indiana and a US presidential hopeful, married the couple in his office at 8.15am (local time).

Mary along with her partner Gabe, whose last names were not provided, were on their way to the hospital for a scheduled c-section birth at 9am that day.

Mr Buttigieg posted on his Facebook page, saying he ran into the couple on his way to the toilet in his office.

“In my mind I saw the rare few minutes of free time I had left vanishing, and … tried to hint that I did not have a lot of time for unplanned meetings,” the post read.

He added that the couple then proceeded to tell him about their intention to marry before Mary giving birth.

They asked Mr Buttigieg if he would do the honours and had all their marriage paperwork ready, along with their hospital documents.

“Obviously there’s only one answer to that question,” he wrote, adding that he gathered members of the staff as witnesses and to fill in the paperwork.

“Their rings weren’t ready, so one of my colleagues found a ribbon that would do the trick.”

The couple left soon after for the hospital and sent Mr Buttigieg a photo of their newborn, Jade, later that afternoon.

“It’s moments like this that I’ll miss when my term as mayor comes to an end,” Mr Buttigieg wrote.

“Congratulations to the newlyweds and new parents, and welcome, Jade, to this unlikely and lovely world!”
