School shootings: How many have occurred in the US in 2018

With the recent events at Great Mills High School and Stoneman Douglas High School, school shootings are predominant occurrences at US high schools.

The call for tighter laws on gun safety have caused tens of thousands of students to walk out of classrooms in the US.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a not for profit organisation that works to prevent gun violence, claims that “everyday 96 Americans are killed with guns”.

So far this year, there have been 11 shootings inside secondary schools in the US.

Where have US school shootings occurred this year?

March 20: Lexington Park, Maryland

At Great Mills High School, an armed student shot two people. The shooter was killed by a resource officer.

March 13: Seaside, California

At Seaside High School, a teacher accidentally discharged a gun during a public safety class. No one was killed but a student was injured.

March 7: Birmingham, Alabama

During dismissal time at Huffman High School, a student was killed after an accidental shooting.

February 14: Parkland, Florida

Seventeen students and teachers were killed at Stoneman Douglas High School after a 19-year-old man went on a shooting rampage.

February 9: Nashville

In a parking lot at Pearl-Cohn High School, a student was shot five times.

February 5: Oxon Hill, Maryland

At Oxon Hill High, a student was shot in a parking lot but was treated and released by the hospital.

February 1: Los Angeles, California

At Sal Castro Middle School, a 15-year-old was shot in the head and another shot in the wrist. A 12-year-old was charged for negligent discharge.

January 31: Philadelphia

A 32-year-old man was shot and killed in the Lincoln High School parking lot.

January 23: Benton, Kentucky

Two 15-year-olds were killed at Marshall County High School after a 15-year-old shot 16 people. The student was charged with two counts of murder and 12 counts of first degree assault.
