United States President Donald Trump has congratulated China’s President Xi Jinping on his re-election, calling his continued rise to power “extraordinary”.
President Xi was re-elected for a second five-year term on Wednesday (AEDT) and will have his ideology enshrined in the Chinese constitution, making him the most powerful leader of the Communist state since its founder, Mao Zedong.
Mr Trump, who met President Xi for the first time at his Mar-a-Lago estate in April this year, said on Twitter he had phoned the Chinese leader to congratulate him on his “extraordinary elevation”.
The two leaders also discussed North Korea and trade, “two very important subjects”, Mr Trump wrote.

The United States, which has the world’s largest economy, is China’s biggest trading partner.
Chinese state media reported that during the phone call President Xi also expressed a desire to “jointly blueprint future development of China-US ties”.
“Melania and I look forward to being with President Xi & Madame Peng Liyuan in China in two weeks for what will hopefully be a historic trip!” Mr Trump tweeted.
Mr Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will travel to Beijing next month where the US President is expected to place pressure on President Xi to implement United Nations Security Council resolutions banning Chinese imports to Pyongyang.
Along with Russia, China is one of Pyongyang’s only allies and it accounts for 90 per cent of the rogue state’s trade.
Following his re-election at the end of the Communist Party congress in Beijing, President Xi pledged to spearhead the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”.
The 19th Party Congress marked a major reorganisation of the Communist Party, with five of seven members in the Politburo Standing Committee, China’s top decision-making body, replaced.
When introducing the new leadership team, President Xi broke with tradition by failing to name a clear successor, prompting many to speculate on whether he plans to rule beyond a second term.
As well as being China’s President, President Xi is General Secretary of the Communist Party and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
