The great escape: inmates explode wall and flee

Inmates in one of Brazil’s most notorious prisons prompted a manhunt after they blew up a jail wall using explosives and escaped into the streets of Recife.

Up to 40 prisoners remained at large after
one of the walls of Frei Damiao de Bonzanno Prison was destroyed on Saturday afternoon (local time), according to local media reports.

According to officials, two of the escapees later died when military police attempted to re-capture the 40 prisoners.

Of the escapees, 36 were returned to custody, another was hospitalised and one person was still missing.

Police said on Globo television that one of the two inmates killed was shot at after breaking into a local house.

The jailbreak came just three days after another mass escape from the Professor Barreto Campelo Prison in the same region.

All 53 inmates involved in that incident have since been re-captured.
