St John ambulance says it attended the scene and the victim died.
There are reports the woman was attacked by the tiger when the enclosure was being cleaned.
The New Zealand Herald reports that the zoo has three Sumatran tigers, including male Jaka and females Mencari and Molek, which arrived at the Hamilton Zoo in 2001, a year after staff opened the exhibit.
Waikato Police Sergeant Juliet Burgess said the attack was “tragic”.
“This is a tragic incident. It is too early to determine exactly what’s happened.”
