Mormons reveal one of ‘holiest’ relics for first time

The Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints has released a picture of one of its most sacred and special relics for the first time ever.

The “seer stone”, a brown and black egg-shaped stone, is the central element in one of the church’s foundation stories, dating back to 1827 when Joseph Smith received the texts his diocese is built on.

Mormon teachings claim that Smith was in Manchester, New York, when an angel revealed itself to him with a set of “golden plates”.

On the plates was the text that is now known as the “Book of Mormon”, the faith’s holy text.

However Smith first had to translate the text and he did so thanks to the help of the “seer stone”, which he lodged in his hat.

Smith translated the golden plates by looking into the hat with the seer stone inside, before the angel took the plates away.

Smith reportedly found the seer stone down a well in 1822 and then polished it into its present state.

The Mormon Church has recently begun releasing a whole host of stories, historical relics and doctrines to the world, in an effort to be more transparent.

For example in 2014, the church admitted and detailed how Smith had 33 wives, with 11 of them under the age of 18.

The campaign is believed to be its way of getting ahead of the story, and controlling the uncovering of information themselves, before others do.

Mormonism has also been under heightened interest of late thanks to the smash-hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
