Even George W Bush is summoned for jury duty

Potential jurors who showed up to a Dallas courtroom on Wednesday were surprised by a fellow citizen in their jury pool – former President George W Bush.

Spokesman for Mr Bush, Freddy Ford, confirmed to The Dallas Morning News that the former president turned up for jury duty after being summoned, and was at the courthouse from about 8:50am until just before noon.

He was not selected to serve, but the former statesman spent time talking to other jurors and taking pictures with those who wanted one.

A member of the public at the courtroom, Sheri Coleman, of Dallas, said the president’s visit was “awesome” and “surprising”.

“He was very personable, very friendly, just ‘hey I’m here to serve,’ he asked questions and was very nice,” Ms Coleman said.

“I loved it.”

The reason Mr Bush wasn’t selected as a juror wasn’t because of his high-profile nature, but simply because the positions had already been filled.

Joel Ehambe, another potential juror, told The Dallas Morning News he sat just in front of the former president.

“I turned around and he was seated right behind me and I said, “I think I know that guy,” Mr Ehambe said.

“Then the judge introduced him and said it was an honor to have the former president of the United States in the court.”

Mr Ehambe said he was nervous at first to be in the same room as the former president, but Mr Bush helped put everyone at ease.

“He was laughing and talking and it helped ease the tension,” he said.
