Dramatic scenes as work cranes smash into homes

About 20 people have been injured after two cranes slid off a river pontoon crashing into buildings in the dutch town of Alphen aan den Rijn.

Cameras filmed the dramatic scenes as the two cranes lost balance and smashed through the buildings.

“Two cranes and the stretch of roadway they were carrying fell on five houses in all,” Ton Koot, brigade spokesman for firefighters of the central Netherlands region said.

Dutch media said the cranes fell on a second-hand clothing store and another shop selling art and drawing supplies.

Rescue teams were needed to search the rubble for casualties.

The cranes had been been repairing the Queen Julia Bridge, which dates back to the 1950s.
