Super-cool speaker ‘courageous’ under fire
When the Taliban attacked Afghan parliament, there was one man incredibly calm as chaos erupted and dozens fled around him.
The speaker of Afghanistan’s legislature Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, barely blinked as a suicide bomber detonated a car outside the building and six gunmen stormed the compound.
• Jihadist’s family wants to come home to Australia
• Warrants for alleged jihadists
• Terrorist took less than two minutes to get through Customs
As the building shook, dust and debris rained and people screamed in panic, but Mr Ibrahimi sat resolutely, calling for calm while security tried to cover him.
Video of the moment the attack happened spread online because the session was televised.
Parliament was sitting to endorse a nominee standing to be the next defence minister.
He reportedly blamed the dangerous disruption to parliament on an electrical fault, although his colleagues seemed to be more sure about the serious nature of the situation.
Nine people perished in the callous act of violence and given the attack’s viciousness, people have been stunned at how calm Mr Ibrahimi remained.
