‘The International Flag of Planet Earth’
A Swedish graphic designer has released a flag to represent every single person on the face of the globe and he’s named it “The International Flag of Planet Earth”.
The design is dominated by the colour blue and a union of seven rings forming a flower.
• Lobster lands farmers in hot water with Kim
• Did this act of “mateship” deserve a penalty?
• The most absurd New Zealand flag suggestions
“The blue field represents water which is essential for life – also as the oceans cover most of our planet’s surface,” the flag’s website says.
“The flower’s outer rings form a circle which could be seen as a symbol of Earth as a planet and the blue surface could represent the universe.”
Designer Oskar Pernefeldt’s study base the Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm says in a video on the flag that it’s “a reminder we should all stand united, celebrate life itself”.
The flag is only a suggestion and wasn’t made for any official reason. But you never know when we might need to stand united as a globe against an impending alien invasion, right?
Blue was chosen as the flag’s main hue also because it is a “clear contrast” to the black of outer space and the white of the space suit.
Social media response to the design was mixed, as one tweeted they “really like this proposal,” while another said “if i were an alien? Destroy earth now”.
“We come in peace.” I’d fly this Earth flag in a heartbeat. http://t.co/Hvwnjxxgc4

Surely this is more appropriate? #earthflag pic.twitter.com/XgTNsVuoC2

I feel like the Earth flag should be green. Or maybe inner-city smog grey. You would think the sea creatures are in charge with this blue.
