“We are aware that there was an exchange of gunfire involving Resolute Support service members,” the US embassy has confirmed in a statement.
“All Chief of Mission personnel of the visiting party are accounted for,” it read.
There were reports US Ambassador Michael McKinley escaped in a helicopter shortly after the attack began.
But the US Embassy has denied the Ambassador was present prior to the exchange of fire.
There are reports at least one of the Afghani gunmen was killed and another three injured.
