Peter Greste deportation hope

The family of Peter Greste are ‘shocked’ and ‘disappointed’ the detained journalist was denied bail by an Egyptian court, but say the decision to overturn his charges is a “step in the right direction”.

Greste is now pinning his hopes on being deported home to face legal proceedings in Australia instead of facing retrial in an Egyptian court within the next month.

Brother Mike Greste said the court’s decision to deny the men bail was disappointing but they would remain hopeful.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t get the most positive outcome, but upon reflection, it’s certainly the next best result for us. It’s been recognised the first trial was flawed,” he told media.

He and brother Andrew, who has spent much of the past year in Egypt campaigning for Greste’s release, said the past 12 months had been “mixed and confusing” for the family.

“It won’t be over until he’s free but we’re not going to give up until he’s home.”

Peter Greste tributeFather Juris Greste said the family were hopeful the Al Jazeera reporter would be deported under a presidential decree, and were afraid a second trial would also be unjust.

“We have big hopes in the deportation process,” Mr Greste told the ABC.

“Looking at it quite openly, we would be prepared to do almost anything to have to not go through a second trial because even though we and hundreds of senior international jurists around the world – and world leaders – know that the first trial was most unfair and unjust, there is nothing that can be guaranteed even for a retrial.”

Mother Lois Greste said the family were dismayed that an appeal to have Greste and his two colleagues released on bail was denied.

“Today’s Cassation Court [decision] was positive. We were a bit shocked and dismayed to start off with because our hopes obviously had been that it would all be over and done with,” Mrs Greste said.

“But that wasn’t to be.”
