‘Fat girl costumes’: Walmart apologises

American supermarket company Walmart has been forced to apologise after describing plus-size Halloween outfits for women as “fat girl costumes”.
The phrase was used on the company’s official website and quickly picked up by Twitter users, who labelled it “offensive” and “rude”.

“Fat girl costume” soon became a trending topic on Twitter in the US and the site was promptly changed.
Now, the section reads “Women’s plus-size Halloween costumes”.
A spokesperson for the company told People magazine the error was “unacceptable”.
“This never should have been on our site. It is unacceptable, and we apologize. We are working to remove it as soon as possible and ensure this never happens again.”
