Arrested man suspected of 18 killings

Mexican police have arrested a man suspected of involvement in at least 18 murders, one of the country’s top prosecutors says.

Mexico state Attorney General Alejandro Gomez Sanchez said on Saturday the arrest was made thanks to investigative work by police attached to his office.

The state prosecutor identified the suspect as Aaron Espinoza Hernandez and said he confessed to selling crack cocaine for a criminal gang headed by Francisco Javier Resillas Rios.

Mexico is offering a reward of 500,000 pesos ($A42,200) for information leading to Resillas’ arrest, Gomez said.

Espinoza is suspected of involvement of at least 18 homicides in the towns of Atizapan, Nicolas Romero and Cuautitlan Izcalli dating back to last year, he added.

Mexican federal forces were deployed in April to Mexico state amid an uptick in violent crime.
