Happy gets Lucky: Video

They were two of the catchiest songs to hit the airwaves over the last year and they both featured Pharrell Williams behind the microphone.

Daft Punk’s Get Lucky was irresistible in a nouveau-retro-disco kind of way, and the toe-tapping goodness of Happy had most of us singing along as well, depsite none of us seeing the movie it was created for – Despicable Me 2.

Both tunes show that Pharrell Williams is in the ascendent right now, and when you factor in his work on the Robin Thicke’s smash hit Blurred Lines, it’s easy to argue that’s he’s a hit machine.

So it was with some trepidation that we approached this mash-up of Get Lucky and Happy. Most efforts to blend tunes which are perfect in their original forms are destined to fail – like combing two rare, unique ingredients in the kitchen and ending with up with a hideous concoction that destroys both.

Pomplamoose not only took on that tightrope walking job but skipped across to the other side of the canyon without even looking down or bothering to check which way the wind was blowing. They’ve also done similar things to songs by Beyonce, Edith Piaf, Lorde and Beck.

To merge these pop music monsters they rebuilt their version of songs from the ground up. Here’s the recipe:

Shot in one take, no cuts or invisible edits starting at 0:04. For the verse of our mashup, we used the chords from ‘Get Lucky’ with the vocals from ‘Happy.’ For our prechorus, we used the vocals from both ‘Happy’ and ‘Get Lucky.’ The chorus of our mashup is the chords and vocals from ‘Happy’ and the vocals from ‘Lose Yourself to Dance’.

Got that?

When you get to the end of this short video, you’ve not only listened to a satisfying cover of two great songs, you’ve been delighted by some clever movie-making. Well worth your 2.42 minutes.
