BAFTAs red carpet style
Best dressed
Lupita Nyong’o
She has gone from red carpet to press conference to film festival while promoting her film 12 Years a Slave, and we’re still waiting for the 30 year-old to put a foot wrong. Nyong’o looks so gorgeous in emerald green Dior that we are willing to overlook the fact that it’s a near exact replica of Jennifer Lawrence’s Golden Globes dress last year.
Naomie Harris
The Mandela star embraces her Bond girl past in a plunging tuxedo dress from Gucci. Harris knows to balance out her ultra sexy look with classic, minimal accessories and sleek hair. Bravo.
The French star has gained international acclaim for her role in Blue is the Warmest Colour, so it makes sense that she should embrace the hue on the red carpet too. This Prada design is youthful and flattering and her 1940s-style hairdo completes the look.Uma Thurman
Sometimes keeping it simple is the surest way to success. Thurman’s black Atelier Versace sheath dress and diamond necklace remind us of Princess Diana which is a very good thing, especially in Britain.
Helen Mirren
The quintessential British sex symbol at 68 years of age, Mirren could wear anything. It helps that she chooses dresses like this though. Her black embellished gown manages to be both eye-catching and appropriate.
Worst dressed
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
They are Hollywood royalty yet for some reason remain an only occasional presence on the red carpet. While it’s cute that they chose this appearance to coordinate their outfits, Jolie can do better and we were craving an ultra-glam gown moment.
Amy Adams
Adams usually pushes the boundaries on the red carpet, which is why it is so disappointing to see her playing it safe in a glorified shirt dress. The black washes out her usually glowing complexion and her slicked updo is too severe.
Cate Blanchett
Perhaps without the heavy statement necklace, this printed gown would have been passable. Regardless, we prefer Blanchett in colour and poor accessorising let her down on this one.
Oprah
So close, yet so far. While we love the cut of Oprah’s lace gown, the colour coupled with her crazy hair makes her look more mother of the bride than Hollywood heavyweight.
Maggie Gyllenhaal
This dress had good intentions, but they were probably best left to a haute couture photo shoot for Vogue rather than a real life red carpet situation. Way too much of everything.
The “We’re not quite sure” category
Lily Allen
Lily Allen has never tried to pretend that she’s conservative. The Brit singer loves everything crazy and more often than not ends up on worst dressed lists without batting an eyelid. This time, she appears to be walking the fine line between stealing the show for the right reasons, and being a red carpet train wreck. Personally, we’re loving it but we are willing to put it to a vote. Have your say in the poll below.
