‘High alert’: Days of severe thunderstorms to belt south-east

There are severe thunderstorm warnings for Sydney and a vast stretch of NSW on Thursday, amid predictions of days more of wild weather across south-east Australia.
The key focus on Thursday was the central and southern coasts of NSW, including Sydney, the Hunter Valley, Illawarra, Central Tablelands and parts of the southern ranges.
Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said communities should be on “high alert” for thunderstorms, which could bring heavy rain and flash flooding that could cause mayhem on roads.
“The key risks associated with that rainfall will be centred around flooding – flash flooding could occur very quickly as these storms move through which could quickly lead to very dangerous driving conditions,” she said.
“We may see trees or limbs brought down by heavy rains or strong winds.”
Weatherzone said severe thunderstorms were expected across central and eastern parts of NSW on Thursday afternoon and evening.
They could produce heavy rain with the risk of flash flooding, large hail and damaging winds.
The storm risk is expected to continue on Friday across south-east Australia, with severe storms possible across broad stretches of NSW – including Sydney again – but also parts of inland Queensland and north-eastern Victoria.

Weekend blast
The weekend could bring another “fresh burst” of moisture, with significant areas of rain and thunderstorms making a comeback, the weather bureau said.
On Saturday, Victoria and Melbourne are expected to bear the brunt of the downpours, with rain falling across the state.
Tasmanians are also urged to brace for heavy falls and possible river rises.
Weatherzone said rain and thunderstorms would continue on Saturday across south-eastern Australia, with a low-pressure system sitting near Tasmania.
On Sunday, the central and southern coastline of NSW should have returning heat and clear skies in the morning before more rain in the afternoon.
