SES readies itself for more NSW storm damage

Storms could cause more damage to homes in NSW with the State Emergency Service (SES) expecting another busy night on Saturday after receiving hundreds of calls for help overnight.

The SES said it received 446 calls for assistance from people around the state on Friday.

With the weather not expected to improve, the SES expects another busy night.

“There is some potential for some storms around Sydney this afternoon,” an SES spokeswoman said.

“It will definitely result in more calls for help.”

Of the calls received last night, 164 of them were yet to be attended and were mostly in the Central Coast and south Sydney area.

Many of those who called the SES for help had experienced damaged roofs, flooding and leaking in their homes.

“The type of calls were for leaking roofs, flooding and inundation of properties, roof and window damage,” the SES spokeswoman said.

“It’s quite significant. The areas that were most affected were the Sydney northern suburbs, so around Wyong, Warringah, Pittwater, Gosford and Willoughby, Lane Cove.”

She said calls for help started about 9.00pm AEST and escalated in volume very quickly.

“Probably about 10 calls every 10 minutes and then we saw a lot more around 11 and 12 o’clock.”

There was a severe thunder storm warning issued Sydney Metro, Illawarra and the Central Coast, where falls of up to 30 to 40 millimetres were recorded.

“SES crews will be quite busy going out and attending any jobs that they haven’t overnight,” the spokeswoman said.
