Boat users in the South West warned to watch out for migrating whales
The Department of Parks and Wildlife says humpback and southern right whales and their calves are returning from the north to feeding areas in the Antarctic.
Wildlife Officer Pia Courtis says the whales are often spotted at the Ngari Cape Marine Park, or anywhere between Cape Naturaliste and Geographe Bay.
She says people on boats, surfboards or kayaks should keep their distance.
“Definitely enjoy them but make sure you are yeah at a safe distance away, at least at 100 metres away and don’t approach the whales, let them come past you and if they do come closer put your boat in neutral and slowly move away at very slow speeds,” she said.
