A teen accused of stabbing another boy to death at a Melbourne shopping centre has wiped away tears as he faced court for the first time.
The 15-year-old Melton West boy was charged with murder after Oscar Hamilton was fatally stabbed at the Woodgrove Shopping Centre in Melton on Tuesday.
Oscar was found with life-threatening injuries at the centre’s food court just before noon.
Bystanders and paramedics tried to perform CPR but the 16-year-old died at the scene.
The 15-year-old boy charged with his murder faced a children’s court on Wednesday for a filing hearing.
No details of the alleged offending were read in court, with the 15-year-old instead remanded to a committal mention in January.
His lawyer told the magistrate it was the teenagers first time in custody and he needed to be assessed by a nurse.
The boy did not apply for bail.
Oscar Hamilton’s family and friends have paid tribute to the teenaged victim, describing him as a sweet and respectful boy who was taken too soon.
His girlfriend Briannan Hibbert created a public Facebook page in his memory, where she said her heart would forever ache knowing that he was gone.
