Homicide probe after woman’s body found in river

A homicide investigation is under way after a woman’s body was found in a major river in inner Melbourne.

The remains were discovered in the Maribyrnong River at Smithfield Road in Flemington about 11.30am on Sunday.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the death was being treated as suspicious.

“We are still in the process of speaking to next of kin and will provide any further updates when we are able to,” she said.

A passerby discovered a man’s body in the same river close to the Footscray Wharf 90 minutes earlier but the discoveries are not believed to be linked.

Police said it appeared the man’s death was unlikely to suspicious.

Neither body has been identified.
