A man has died after falling from a hot-air balloon in Melbourne early on Monday.

A major emergency operation is underway in Preston, in Melbourne’s north, after the man’s body was found on Albert Street just after 7.30am.

The hot air balloon is among several believed to have landed at nearby Yarra Bend Park shortly after.

Police are reportedly speaking the occupants of the balloons, and were seen surrounding the basket of one after it landed.

The Seven Network is reporting passengers on other balloons heard a radio mayday call shortly into their flights on Monday morning.

Albert Street was closed in both directions between Wood Street and Murray Road on Monday morning. Dozens of police and other emergency services remained on the scene

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

Victoria Police will provide an update later on Monday.
